When the Cook County alcohol tax was introduced in 1989, it was designed to support the County public health system where doctors and nurses see the impact and financial costs of increased alcohol consumption on a daily basis.


As alcohol prices have gone up, the tax rate on alcohol has decreased. The proposal to modestly raise the tax on alcohol – restoring it to its 1995 level and still below the City and State levels – and will ensure that the County health system can continue to provide quality patient care.
