A ribbon-cutting and celebration occurred at 2127 S. 9th Avenue in Maywood, Illinois on May 17, 2012.
The rehabilitation of this two-flat was a combined effort of PLCCA (Proviso-Leyden Council for Community Action, Inc.), the township of Maywood and the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development. Officials present at the event were: Commissioner Earlean Collins, Cook County; Bishop Dr. Claude Porter for PLCCA; Mayor Yarborough of Maywood; and Herman Brewer, Bureau Chief, Bureau of Economic Development. Many other staff, community members and volunteers also joined in the festivities as shown in our photos.
Cook County’s Affordable Housing Program, within the Bureau of Economic Development, has been working with PLCCA since 1999. PLCCA is a partner with the County, their NSP (Neighborhood Stabilization Program) and other federally based programs. Rehabilitation on this property started in November 2011 and was completed in April, 2012. The cost of the project was in the range of $206,000. PLCCA will be the owner of the two-flat , renting to households at or below 50% of AMI (area median income).
This property is designed for individuals and families with low and moderate incomes. All applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the program, as well as the property’s tenant selection and screening criteria. During construction, more than 100 individuals came by to inquire about the rental of the two units.
PLCCA (Proviso-Leyden Council for Community Action, Inc.) was established in 1968 by Bishop Dr. Porter as a private, not-for-profit corporation to serve low-income residents in Cook County’s Proviso and Leyden Townships, made up of 38 municipalities. It provides a range of programs and services focused on its Mission to eliminate poverty. PLCCA prides itself on having served more than 30,000 unduplicated clients, to date. Additionally, PLCCA runs its 30 plus assistance programs with an operating budget of approximately $6 Million Dollars and maintains a total property value of approximately $9 Million Dollars. The two-flat at 2127 S. 9th Avenue in Maywood, Illinois was rehabilitated by Outlook Design and Construction, as General Contractor, an MBE owned firm. This project is another successful example of Cook County officials, not-for-profit groups and the private sector forming a viable public-partnership to build and grow strong communities within the County.
