Cook County thinks big about sustainability. The Cook County Green Leadership Team, chaired by President Preckwinkle’s Chief of Staff, set a goal to reduce the County’s harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050 as a meaningful way to fight climate change. We have invested in efficiency projects to reduce energy use in three-quarters of the County’s buildings. The Dunne Administration Building at 69 W. Washington received GOLD LEED certification last year, in large part due to more efficient use of energy. From 2010 through 2015, Cook County achieved an actual decrease in GHG emissions from building energy of 25 percent, more than twice our annual target. Our latest news: we are reducing energy use at our suburban courthouses and highway facilities by 50%.
